Gyn Rotation

Residents rotating on the Gyn radiation oncology service will participate in the evaluation, treatment, toxicity management and follow-up of patients with primary gynecologic malignancies. These patients are often seen in a multidisciplinary context with medical and gynecologic oncologists. Patients will be seen and evaluated in both the UWHC radiotherapy clinic as well as in the Gyn-oncology clinic, and potentially at Meriter Hospital. Attendance at the multidisciplinary tumor board on Thursday mornings is mandatory. Residents should expect to present patients for whom they were the primary evaluators.

Goals and Objectives

Understand the etiology, epidimiology, genetics, pathophysiology, presentation, natural history, treatment options and treatment toxicities for patients with gynecologic malignancies. This will include not only radiation therapy, but surgical and chemotherapy-based approaches as well. Develop proficiency in technical aspects of Gyn radiation therapy. This will include the following: External beam radiation therapy, including patient set-up, simulation and treatment delivery; Gyn brachytherapy, which includes both low-dose rate and high-dose rate applications, and intracavitary and interstitial applicators. Understand the integration and role of surgery and chemotherapy administration in the management of these patients. This may involve rotations in the surgical and medical oncology based clinics for this specialty.
