Head & Neck Rotation

Residents rotating on the H & N service will participate in the evaluation, treatment, management and follow-up of patients with malignancies arising in the HandN, including benign and malignant tumors. The patients will be evaluated in both the radiotherapy clinic as well as in a multi-disciplinary context together with medical oncologists and H & N oncology surgeons. Participation in the weekly H&N tumor board is mandatory and occurs on Friday afternoons. Residents will be expected to present those patients for whom they were the primary evaluators. Residents will also participate in the scientific investigation of novel treatment approaches in patients with H & N cancer.

Goals and Objectives

Understand the idiology, epidimiology, genetics, pathophysiology, presentation, natural history, treatment options and consequences of treatment for patients with malignancies of the H & N. Understand the multidisciplinary role in the evaluation and treatment of such patients, including specific and general aspects of HandN radiation, surgical oncology and chemotherapy administration. Develop proficiency in technical aspects of radiation therapy for HandN malignancies. This will include, but is not limited to, the following areas of expertise: External beam radiation therapy, Brachytherapy, 3-Dimensional conformal therapy, Fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy.
