IMRT

From Human Oncology

Printable version | Disclaimers | Privacy policy

Radiation oncologists routinely use Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) for the treatment of a variety of cancers. IMRT allows very precise external beam radiotherapy treatments. This technique involves changing the size, shape and intensity of the radiation beam to conform to the size, shape, and location of the patient's tumor. This results in a high dosage to the tumor and a lower dose to the surrounding healthy tissues. There is increasing evidence that cancer is best treated when radiotherapy is delivered in fewer, larger dose fractions than the conventional smaller doses.
