The Director and the teaching staff are responsible for the general administration of a program, including those activities related to the recruitment, selection, instruction, supervision, counseling, evaluation, and advancement of residents, and the maintenance of records related to program accreditation.

Radiation Oncology House Staff Committee

This committee consisting of the Director, Program Coordinator, Chief Resident, Physics Director, and all Radiation Oncology attending physicians, is responsible for overall oversight of the program including policy and procedure review and revision, major structural changes to the program, setting overall educational objectives and conflict resolution.

Program Director

There is a single Director responsible for the program. The Director is a highly qualified radiation oncologist with substantial experience in education in radiation oncology, who demonstrates the ability to organize and direct the teaching program, maintain a quality teaching staff, and provides a significant commitment of time and effort to the residency program. He/she is currently certified by the American Board of Radiology in Radiation Oncology or possesses suitable equivalent qualifications. The Director is licensed to practice medicine in the state of Wisconsin and also holds an appointment in good standing to the medical staff of the institution.

The Director is responsible for the structure and content of the educational program and must document the provision of training in clinical radiation oncology, treatment planning, radiation physics, and radiobiology. The Director, along with the Chairman, has the final authority with regard to the training program. House Staff Affairs executes policies as set forth by the Director. The Director, with the help of the Chief Resident and Program Coordinator, is responsible for the day-to-day implementation of policy and administrative functions of the program, as guided by House Staff Affairs.

Teaching Staff

The program provides a minimum of six radiation oncologists who devote all of their clinical time in direct one-on-one teaching interactions with resident in addition to coordinating and teaching during conferences. In addition, the faculty includes one full-time radiation biologist or basic scientist, who is on-site, for the teaching of radiation biology and one full-time medical physicist, who is also on-site, for the teaching of radiation physics; in reality several faculty are on-site to fulfill this role. The radiation oncologists and the medical physicist are certified by the American Board of Radiology or possess suitable equivalent qualifications.

Graduate medical education takes place in an environment of inquiry and scholarship in which residents participate in the development of new knowledge, learn to evaluate research findings, and develop habits of inquiry as a continuing professional responsibility. The responsibility for establishing and maintaining an environment of inquiry and scholarship rests with the teaching staff. While not all members of a teaching staff must be investigators, the staff as a whole must demonstrate broad involvement in scholarly activity. This activity should include:

Active participation of the teaching staff in clinical discussions, rounds, conferences, and didactic lectures in a manner that promotes a spirit of inquiry and scholarship. Participation in journal clubs and research conferences. Active participation in regional or national professional and scientific societies, particularly through presentations at the organizations' meetings and publication in their journals. Participation in research, particularly in projects that are peer reviewed and/or result in publication or presentations at regional and national scientific meetings. Providing guidance and technical support (e.g. research design, statistical analysis) for residents involved in research or scholarly activities. The teaching staff must be organized and have regular documented meetings to review program goals and objectives as well as program effectiveness in achieving them. This occurs through a monthly meeting. At least one resident representative should participate in these reviews.
