Clinical Studies

The University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center (UWCCC) typically has 200 to 250 clinical trials available for patient participation. Clinical trials are treatment options that are experimental in nature utilizing new treatment methods, drugs or combinations of therapies. The Radiation Oncology department participates in numerous clinical trials, please see our clinical studies listings for more information.

Treatment Methods

Brachytherapy

Brachytherapy is an advanced treatment for several types of cancers. During the treatment, radioactive seeds are placed in or around the tumor, giving a high dose of radiation to the cancerous tumor while limiting the radiation exposure to the surrounding healthy tissue. The UW Department of Human Oncology offers treatment for breast, cervical , and prostate cancer using brachytherapy.

High-Dose Rate
Low-Dose Rate

Radiosurgery

Stereotactic radiosurgery is the method of giving a high dose of radiation to a small area in your brain, usually in one treatment. This allows delivery of the radiation to the abnormal area while the surrounding normal brain tissue receives only a small dose of radiation.

External Beam Radiation Therapy

External Beam Radiation Therapy is the most common type of radiation therapy. Beams from a special X-ray machine called a linear accelerator are aimed at the tumor from outside of the body. Learn more about Head and Neck Cancer and treatment options at the UW hospital and clinics.

3D-CRT

Three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT) is a technique that allows the radiation oncologist to "conform" the radiation to the tumor, thus avoiding some organs and tissues nearby.

IMRT

Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) is an advanced type of external beam radiation that targets cancer while causing less damage to normal tissues.
