Welcome to the Radiation Oncology Residency Program in the Department of Human Oncology at the University of Wisconsin.
The goal of our residency program is to train the next generation of comprehensive oncologists. The residency experience is tailored to ensure that each trainee has a comprehensive understanding of cancer biology and treatment modalities—surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiotherapy. This is achieved through a robust clinical experience, faculty-run lecture series, rotations through other departments, multidisciplinary clinics, tumor boards and many other educational experiences.
With a hands-on approach to learning, our residents develop an in-depth knowledge of the latest treatment techniques and technology in radiation oncology. Residents gain experience and expertise in brachytherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS/SBRT), intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), volumetric arc therapy (VMAT) and pulsed reduced dose rate (PRDR) radiation. With these experiences, many residents go on to lead programs and departments across the country.
Technological and research innovations at the University of Wisconsin ensure that residents are always exposed to the newest treatment techniques and advances. The University of Wisconsin was the original developer of Tomotherapy, and our department continues to be a national leader in the use of this technology. We are also one of the first departments to bring MRI-guided (ViewRay) radiotherapy into the clinic. Our faculty remain at the forefront of combining radiation with targeted therapy and immunotherapy in the lab and the clinic. This provides residents ample opportunities for clinical, translational, physics or basic science research. We encourage research through protected research time for all residents and participation in the Holman Research Pathway for interested residents.
