Welcome Claire Baniel, MD incoming assistant professor.
Hometown: I’ve lived in both Milwaukee and Green Bay and consider both to be home
Educational background: I completed my undergraduate education at Michigan State University with a focus in Chemistry and Human Biology, followed by medical school at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. I attended Stanford for my residency in radiation oncology.
When, and how, did you develop an interest in the field of Radiation Oncology? I first discovered radiation oncology as a medical student during my Shapiro summer research fellowship.
What attracted you to UW-Madison and the Department of Human Oncology? The people. It is a privilege to be able to return home to Wisconsin to care for the communities that helped raise me. Additionally, the faculty at UW-Madison are world class; I look forward to being a part of a growing cancer center with exciting new innovations.
What are you most excited about during your first year with the department in this role? I am excited to provide care for cancer patients at the new East Medical Center, which increases access for people across the state of Wisconsin. I
What hobbies or special activities do you enjoy outside of work? Reading, baking, running, and cheering on the Packers with my family.

Research: In addition to research in my areas of clinical focus (hematologic and thoracic malignancies), I also have experience in healthcare process improvement research including quality improvement, patient safety, workforce opportunities, and climate sustainability.
