The Department of Human Oncology is deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Ernest “Ernie” Borden, MD, professor emeritus of human oncology, who died on January 18.
Dr. Borden joined the University of Wisconsin faculty in 1973 as one of only two board‑certified medical oncologists at the time. He quickly became a foundational leader in shaping both the clinical oncology program and the emerging field of cancer immunotherapy at UW–Madison. His early research at the UW Carbone Cancer Center explored the potential of interferons in cancer treatment, helping establish the groundwork for the nationally recognized immunology and immunotherapy programs that followed.
Dr. Paul Sondel, a longtime colleague, shared the following reflection on Dr. Borden’s legacy:
“Ernie arrived at UW in 1973, as one of 2 boarded medical oncologists, and helped build a world-class clinical oncology program here at UW in parallel with a world class translational/clinical research program in the new realm of immunotherapy. He was a founder of what is now The Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer in 1985, was its president from 1986–1988, and led pioneering studies in clinical testing of recombinant infant human interferon.
He was a kind mentor and colleague, an outstanding role model in helping others stay organized, positive, and focused on issues of true importance—and he excelled at doing this himself. I was fortunate to have my own lab next to his, to meet with him weekly, and to collaborate throughout the 1980–1990 period.
After his leadership roles in Milwaukee, Baltimore, and Cleveland, he returned to UW–Madison in 2013, became an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Human Oncology, and remained active, supportive, insightful, and generous over the past decade.”
Dr. Borden’s distinguished career spanned multiple institutions, yet he remained deeply connected to UW–Madison and the colleagues he mentored. His leadership, generosity, and dedication to advancing cancer research and patient care leave an enduring legacy within our department and the broader oncology community.
A memorial service will be held February 21 at 2 p.m. at Oakwood Village Prairie Ridge in Madison.
