This award honors one SMPH faculty member each year whose sustained and exemplary effort as a research mentor has developed medical student researchers outside of the classroom.

Established in 2011 to honor outstanding contributions in student education in medical school programs, the awardees are selected by a committee of faculty who have previously been honored for their excellence in teaching and mentorship.

Dr. Baschnagel joined the Department of Human Oncology in 2014 and has excelled in both clinical care and research. He is active within the cancer center where he co-leads the UW Carbone Cancer Center Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Program, serves as Director of Clinical Research for the Department of Human Oncology, co-Chair’s the Cancer Center’s Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee, is co-investigator on the UW Cancer Center’s National Clinical Trials Network Lead Academic Participating Sites, and is the UW Cancer Center’s site PI for our NRG Oncology Cooperative Group.

Dr. Baschnagel’s contributions extend beyond his clinical practice and research activities, as he has had a substantial impact on the academic and professional development of our students. He has mentored a total of 14 SMPH medical students on a multitude of research projects that span both the clinical and translational research space. As a testament to his mentoring, most students continue to work with Dr. Baschnagel well beyond their summer Shapiro research experience.

Congratulations Dr. Baschnagel!
