You may know the Department of Human Oncology is comprised of Radiation Oncologists and Medical Physicists but there are so many other people contributing to our success and we’d like to introduce you to them. Our hope is that through this series you learn a bit about the position, the face behind the title, and that it helps you to grasp the breadth of the field of Radiation Medicine.
Our faculty and staff cover topics from residency program applications to clinical trial enrollment, to proper radiation dosing, to nursing. Please meet Amanda Winge, a patient scheduling coordinator at Eastpark Medical Center and our September Expert!
1. What is your title and which areas of the Department of Human Oncology do you work within? (clinical, research and/or medical education)?
Patient Scheduling Coordinator with the Radiation Oncology Clinic at Eastpark Medical Center. A Patient Scheduling Coordinator schedules treatment procedures, ViewRay planning appointments, and same day urgent planning scans.
2. What drew you to the field?
Nothing really drew me to the field – but I did apply to UW Health back in 2006 because my father worked here, and I favored a good, stable job.
3. What is something you look forward to in your job every day, week, month or year? What’s your favorite part?
I love working with the providers, nurses, etc. I look forward to getting asked the tough questions or being tasked with complicated scheduling and figuring it out and making it work. Nothing is more satisfying than thinking it can’t be done only to make it happen by thinking outside the box and asking a lot of questions.
4. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
I enjoy reading, going to Civil War reenactments, traveling, and playing video games.
5. What is your favorite piece of advice from a mentor or inspiring figure in your life?
My parents told me to always find joy in what I do so I try and incorporate that in my day to day. Except cleaning, I can’t seem to find the joy in that yet.
